Rise and Shine is an interactive online classroom for creative writing of all kinds. Alice posts regular exercises, prompts, resources and provides a chat space where you can connect with other like-minded writers. You can join for just £6 a month and have access to the following features:
Meet with Alice individually for help with your writing project. From a one-off consultation to weekly sessions, you can opt for tutorials with homework (eg, based on one of the courses listed below), or bring your work-in-progress and work with Alice to get the project to the next level.
Sessions cost £95 and last 1 hour, and are conducted online via Zoom or similar, though phone sessions or in-person meetings can be arranged. In-person sessions are held in Oxford.
You can send up to 3,000 words in advance of each session; if you would like to send more please get in touch to discuss. Whole manuscripts can be read for assessment, with prices starting at £450.
Sessions are arranged at a date and time to suit you. Please contact Alice to arrange a slot - you can do this either before or after paying for the session.
Alice specialises in fiction (particularly short stories, crime fiction, and literary novellas/novels), academic writing (particularly history and music), and life-writing (such as memoir or biography). In terms of authors, she works with all ages from 16 to retirees, whether it’s your first book or you just need a fresh pair of eyes.
If you have a short story or extract (an introduction, a chapter) you’re working on, and want some brief written feedback and pointers without having a mentoring session or whole manuscript assessment, you can get quick feedback on up to 1,000 words for a one-off £8 fee (or multiply up for slightly longer works).
Once you’ve paid, email your work as a Word or Word-compatible document to [email protected] and Alice will provide a track-changes document with comments and pointers on relevant features such as: plot, structure, character, setting, tone, pacing, and more. (Turnaround time is up to 2 weeks, but is usually much quicker.)
Alice runs courses in creative writing for all sorts of groups, including undergraduates, Masters students, adult evening classes, library groups, and others. Get in touch if you would like to arrange for Alice to teach one of the following courses to your group. Formats are flexible: online or in person, length anything from 1-2 hours per week for 4-8 weeks to a week-long writing retreat with supplementary content and writing time. Alice also teaches on and runs writing retreats and international courses - see below for upcoming dates and locations.
If you would be interested in attending one of the following courses, join Alice’s mailing list above to be notified the next time it runs.
