Alice Little

Dr Alice Little is an academic researcher in music, history, and the history of collecting, as well as an author of fiction. Her academic specialisms include eighteenth-century musical culture, national music and musical concepts of Englishness, and collections and collectors of music and musical instruments.

Academic Research

Dr Alice Little is a music historian, specialising in the eighteenth century and the history of collecting. She has published on eighteenth-century musical culture, music collecting, and musical instruments, and she regularly teaches undergraduates and postgraduates on music history, musical instruments, and museums.

She was previously a Research Fellow at the Bate Collection of Musical Instruments, was a Junior Research Fellow at Corpus Christi College, Oxford from 2018-2022 and held TORCH Humanities Knowledge Exchange Fellowships from 2019-21, working with the English Folk Dance and Song Society.

Fiction Writing

Alice is an author of fiction, with five collections of short stories to her name. She has edited a further five anthologies of other authors' work, most recently for Enliven Press. She is Associate Writer in Residence at Wytham Woods, and runs regular writing groups and courses to help others improve their craft. She has taught Creative Writing for LMH and Exeter College at the University of Oxford.

In addition to writing and teaching, Alice works with researchers at the Oxford Centre for Life-Writing and co-ordinates the Oxfordshire branch of the Society of Authors.

Wytham Woods

Alice is Associate Writer in Residence at Wytham Woods, the woodland of the University of Oxford - the laboratory with leaves.

Alice ran regular workshops and events in the woods during her three-year residency, 2020-23, including establishing the Wytham Writing Club and running the Pick Your Own Path project, which will continue on an annual basis. Following her residency, her woodland-themed novella is due for publication in 2025.
